Challenge
Millions of Americans run their financial lives in cash, without a bank account. 7-Eleven set out to meet them at the corner store with a prepaid Mastercard, but the experience had to hold together across surfaces that rarely cooperate: a card rack, a register, a mobile app, and a family's kitchen table.
Approach
Working on Netspend's white-label platform, I designed the Trans@ct mobile app experience: activation, balances and transactions, sending money to friends and family, mobile check load through the phone's camera, bill pay, and cash reloads at any 7-Eleven register. The Family Card variant, introduced in 2019, extended one account into a household system: a master account funding individual family members' cards, each with its own activity and alerts.
Impact
The program launched in November 2016 across 7-Eleven's North American footprint of more than 10,900 stores, backed by Netspend's network of 130,000 reload points. In 2020 it took on unexpected weight: as pandemic stimulus payments went out, direct deposit onto the card gave underbanked and unbanked families access to relief funds faster than a mailed paper check. "We know a large number of Americans will need access to their checks as soon as possible, and we want to meet that need," said 7-Eleven CEO Joe DePinto at the time.
